Workshop Descriptions
Be Energy Savvy!
Young scientists will focus on investigating how the Earth transforms its own resources into non-renewable energy. They will also learn how we can convert energy from the sun and wind into forms of renewable energy. Working in small groups, the girls will conduct several eco-experiments to discover the effects of using renewable and non-renewable resources on the environment. Using their findings, they will present their reasons for using renewable resources in an effort to conserve energy. Cost is $15 per girl..
Beyond the Limits!
Get a glimpse of the universe beyond the Earth's atmosphere! This workshop will focus on exploring the sun, planets, and Oort cloud. Come investigate the sun with a solar filter and a telescope to discover its dynamic surface. Young scientists will work together to construct a scale model of the planets in addition to probing the Oort cloud and resident comets. Cost is $15 per girl..
Career Adventures Saturday
Explore more than 30 careers in this special city! Learn business etiquette, try your hand at being a CEO, disc jockey, videographer, bank president, accountant, product designer, data manager, nurse practitioner, saleswoman, and policewoman. Dance Around the World
Dance your way around the world and learn about each country you visit! Learn England's country dances, Germany's Gustav's Skill, Scandinavian Schottische, Patty Cake Polka, Africa's Pata Pata, Ireland's Wave's of Troy and many more. Dive In, Breathe Out
The girls will discover the importance of the water cycle and investigate how the quality of air affects the quality of water. By working in research teams, they will build their own water purification system to help resolve pollution. In a scientist summit, the research teams will present their approach to the resolution and their plan to put this into action. Cost is $15 per girl.
Extra! Extra!
Live the life of a busy reporter, working for the It's Your Future - Dream It! Times. Citizens of It's Your Future - Dream It! will learn how to write, print, and publish a newspaper. Teams will gather news, write stories, compose editorials, and create an advice column before they send their paper to print. Cost is $15 per girl.
Holiday Celebrations - International Style
Discover traditions and music as you join in holiday merriment from faraway places. Listen to stories, make ornaments from distant countries and sample some tasty treats as you celebrate the festivities in international style. Related Awards: Around the World Try-It. Cost is $8.50 per girl.
Inventing Solutions Workshop
Discover what it takes to be an engineer! Girl Scouts will work in teams to develop new inventions and interact with leading women engineers. Cost is $15 per girl.
Inventing Solutions Overnight
Become and engineer as you learn about the design process, create your own Dance Pad Mania, launch ping pong balls into the air, learn about circuitry, and sling shot eggs across the room. Girls will also work in design teams to develop a new invention, and interact with Mad Science scientists! Cost is $40 per girl/$20 per adult.
It's Your Future - Dream It! Workshop
Apply for a job, open up your shop and run the city! Girl Scouts will be produces and consumers as the work in teams to explore how the city works. Cost is $15 per girl.
It's Your Future - Dream It! Overnight
Girl Power happens when Girl Scouts are in charge of running their own city during this overnight experience. Format the state-of-the-art radio station to play your favorite music and host contests throughout the night. Work in teams to explore how the city works, set laws and solve real problems on-thejob in the bank, retail shops, snack shop and city hall. Use computers, cameras and video technology to document the action and capture special memories.
It's Your Planet - Love It! Overnight
Join an overnight science adventure at It's Your Planet - Love It! This overnight will offer hands-on science fun featuring small group projects, science experiments, and career exploration. Young scientists will build, customize and create gadgets; problem-solve to make things function; test the human body; and conduct scientific investigations to address current environmental challenges that need action! We will put our minds to good use as we explore careers and ways we can work together to keep the Earth healthy! Cost is $40 per girl/ $20 per adult.
It's Your Planet - Love It! Camp
This workshop is all about hands-on science fun featuring small group projects, science experiments and career exploration. Cost is $15 per girl.
Lights, Camera, Action!
Whether you prefer to be in front of or behind the camera, you will have the opportunity to explore all aspects of the limelight. Participants will write and conduct interviews and film, produce, and direct their own morning news program. After the workshop, we will screen the completed clips and present the final show to the group! Cost is $15 per girl.
Love to Dance
Discover the history movement from English country dancing to modern line dances. Discover the movements, manners and customs of play parties, circles, contras, a wedding dance, a German mixer and more. Join and create your unique dance! Related Awards: Dance Badge. Cost is $8 per girl.
Making Music
Explore the string family of instruments, discover the music of Ireland's most famous composer and create beautiful sounds as you learn to play an easy tune on an instrument. Compose your own melody and perform it in a spontaneous recital. Related Awards: Making Music Badge. Cost is $8 per girl.
Making Music Try-It
Learn about rhythms and tempos, sounds and actions while having a great time making music. Boogie to the beat, join a band, sing rounds in a choir, and create an action song using the building blocks of music, words, movements and melodies. Related Awards: Making Music Try-It. Cost is $8 per girl.
Money Management
It's Your Future - Dream It! is training the financial wizards of tomorrow! Participants will learn the importance of personal financial management. During this workshop, It's Your Future - Dream It! will open for business, requiring these young citizens to take out loans, set up checking accounts, and learn about good spending and saving habits. Cost is $15 per girl.
Onwards and Upwards
Young scientists will listen and engage in conversation with a representative from the Chicago Center of Green Technology. The girls will focus on forming scientific teams while they collaborate on creating eco-friendly habitats for animals using solar and wind technologies. After studying ecosystems between the earth and sky, they will present their findings in a scientist summit. Cost is $15 per girl.
Open House
Young scientists will listen and engage in conversation with a representative. Come and take a tour of Journey World! This open house is a free event for children K-12 and adults. Perform hands-on experiments at It's Your Planet - Love It! and take a sneak peak of how businesses run at It's Your Future - Dream It!
Radio City
It's Your Future - Dream It! is listening! Instead of waiting to become a Disc Jockey, become one TODAY! Discover the excitement of producing a radio show, creating and broadcasting advertisements, and keeping citizens up-to-date on current events. Participants will work together to write, produce, and deliver a live radio show. They will also compile a personal portfolio of their show. Cost is $15 per girl.
Write, Print & Publish
Explore the world of publishing and communications! Write and illustrate your own life story, create an advice column, collaborate on a novel and produce a magazine… all on computers! Related Awards: Write Away; Point, Click and Go. Cost is $15 per girl.
